About

Julia Hayashi | Watercolors

Here is some basic information for Getting started.

Actually my favorite way to get photos is to look through your facebook photos. I LOVE these photos because often they are caught by others when you aren’t looking. No selfies though. I am pretty picky about the picture we choose because one of my strengths as an artist is spotting a photo that would make a good painting.  I might crop it or enlarge it to make it work but not just any photo will make a good painting. So, I use your photographs and will get together with you to select one of your favorite memories. If you do not have any special photos I can recommend a local photographer to work with you.

We select a size for your finished piece.  And a location for placing the art in your home or office. This is a good thing for me to know so I don’t get crazy with colors that would clash with the environment your art will be set in.

We determine a final price. I have a basic pricing list but depending on detail and extra figures in painting pricing may vary. Your piece will be presented unframed. I can help with frame selection, and recommend a good framer if you live locally to me.

I give you a start date and an estimated completion date. Usually within 14 days of starting.

Deposit 50% at start.  Rest upon completion.

I prefer Credit card payments or cash.

Paper/Sizes

I use Arches #300 paper. There are a variety of finishes and hot and cold press. I will determine the type of paper after the photo selection has been determined. Mould-made in France, this 100% cotton rag watercolor paper from Arches is considered the most popular in the world! Each gelatin-sized sheet has four deckled edges and may be repeatedly erased and over-painted on, while still maintaining its beautiful surface quality and integrity. Available in either brilliant Bright White or traditional Natural White finishes.

I paint within the standard mat and framing sizes to help you keep your framing costs out of the Custom Framing price range.  Watercolor paintings are often floated on top of a mat so mat size does not always come into play but if a painting is to be matted I will use the standard sizes.
